Should We Only Believe in God if We See Him Directly?

Should We Only Believe in God if We See Him Directly?

Before making that argument, we must realize that this is not how we believe most things in life. Unlike other living beings that only trust what they see, humans use a sixth sense: the power of reason. It’s the ability to "believe in one thing by looking at another"—to see an effect and deduce its cause.

The Logic of Deduction

We use reason every day to navigate the world around us. Consider these examples:

  • Firefighter & Smoke: A firefighter sees a huge cloud of smoke over an apartment building. Based on that, he concludes there is a fire and rushes to the scene. He does not say, "I will only believe in the fire once I see the flames with my own eyes."

  • The Taj Mahal & the Architect: When someone admires the beautiful Taj Mahal, they know a brilliant architect designed it. They do not say, "I will only believe that architect existed if I see him in person"—even though he died centuries ago.

  • Judging Intelligence: We call someone intelligent not by scanning their brain, but by observing their actions, speech, and problem-solving skills.

Applying This Logic to the Universe

When we see the countless wonders around us—the vast cosmos, galaxies, countless planets moving in perfect order, night and day, the workings of the human body, the complex information in our genes—we use the same reasoning.

We look at these incredible effects and logically conclude there must be an intelligent Cause behind them. That supreme Designer is God.

The Limits of Our Physical Senses

Our physical eyes have limits. We cannot see ultraviolet rays or X-rays. Our ears can only hear sound up to about 20,000 Hertz. So why would we assume our physical eyes, designed for this world, are capable of directly seeing God, who is beyond this world? He is pure Light and Majesty; our worldly senses cannot contain Him.

Conclusion: We cannot see Him directly in this life, but we can perceive Him. We perceive Him through the evidence of His creation and through the spiritual sense He placed within us to feel His presence, guidance, and truth.

Belief in God is not blind faith—it is the most rational conclusion from the evidence we see everywhere.
